Mechanix: A Sketch-Based Tutoring and Grading System for Free-Body Diagrams

چکیده
fundamental engineering concepts through a course in statics. Statics problems usually require the student to draw planar truss and other free-body diagrams (FBDs). In civil and mechanical engineering, visual and spatial thoughts are essential for the correct absorption of fundamental concepts. By relying on visual aids as opposed to only using the verbal channel of acquiring knowledge, the cognitive load becomes lighter and learning becomes more effective (Sweller 1994). Furthermore, learners should actively engage in the process in order to reach the highest levels of comprehension. The task of freehand sketching encourages and demands that learners are actively constructing their knowledge. In the civil and mechanical engineering domain, sketched planar truss and other free-body diagrams are particularly helpful to the understanding of statics concepts. This type of “forced active processing” ensures attention to visual information and helps learners attend to key elements of the visual system (Kozma 1994). A planar truss diagram is simply a two-dimensional representation of a structure that is constructed from physical beams and joints. Joints, also referred to as nodes, are located at the intersection of two or more beams and are the location where external forces may act upon the object. Articles

Mechanix: A Sketch-Based Tutoring System for Statics Courses
Introductory engineering courses within large universities often have annual enrollments which can reach up to a thousand students. It is very challenging to achieve differentiated instruction in classrooms with class sizes and student diversity of such great magnitude. Professors can only assess whether students have mastered a concept by using multiple choice questions, while detailed homewor...
متن کاملSketch Recognition Algorithms for Comparing Complex and Unpredictable Shapes
In an introductory Engineering course with an annual enrollment of over 1000 students, a professor has little option but to rely on multiple choice exams for midterms and finals. Furthermore, the teaching assistants are too overloaded to give detailed feedback on submitted homework assignments. We introduce Mechanix, a computer-assisted tutoring system for engineering students. Mechanix uses re...
متن کاملAc 2011-2252: a Pen-based Statics Tutoring System
We present an intelligent pen-based tutoring system for Statics – the sub-discipline of engineering mechanics concerned with the analysis of mechanical systems in equilibrium under the action of forces. The system scaffolds students in the construction of free body diagrams and equilibrium equations for planar devices comprised of one or more rigid bodies. While there has been extensive researc...
متن کاملCan Diagrams Predict Essay Grades?
Diagrammatic models of argument have grown in prominence in recent years. While they have been applied in a number of tutoring contexts, it has not yet been shown that student-produced diagrams can be used to effectively grade students or predict their future performance. We show that manually-assigned diagram grades and automatic structural features of argument diagrams can be used to predict ...
متن کاملTutoring System for Pencil Drawing Discipline
This paper describes a sketch tutoring system for beginners. Drawing an image that one actually sees is basic training for drawing education. To start learning, learners must accept that their own sketch contains errors. Our goal is to reveal an effective support method for a learner’s error awareness. We have developed a sketch tutoring system that displays errors with a 3D model from a learne...
